Pictures 501 and HT16 [Montage] Crystal Palace - The end of the line. These two pictures span 25 years but in each case they were taken shortly before the system was closed; the trams in 1935 and the trolleybuses in 1959. Little seems to have changed over that period except, perhaps, for the provision of a roundabout to enable the trolleybuses to turn. However it could be said that only the trams actually went to Crystal Palace whereas the trolleybuses, for most of their life, never did - the building was destroyed by fire in 1936. A ride down Anerley Hill on an open deck tram car must have been an experience in itself although the comfort of a trolleybus in inclement weather was probably to be preferred. Both tram 345 [W/1] and trolleybus 89 were scrapped within a month of services ceasing. The overhead support pole with electricity feeder cables has at its base a cabinet containing equipment to switch off the power.
